Students are offered support in a variety of ways during their time with A4S. Our team of coaches provide students with opportunities to discuss any issues or problems they may have during their course. We also offer close support during theory lessons where coaches help with spelling, literacy skills etc.
Trust based on confidentially is of paramount importance in the A4S worker’s relationship with a young person. There are times however when staff may need to break confidentiality. This is if a student discloses information and an A4S member of staff feels their actions or behaviour could result in harm to themselves or others. It is that member of staff’s responsibility to pass on the information disclosed to the relevant people or agencies. Please refer to our safeguarding policy for more information.
Personal Development Plans
All the students at A4S have termly Personal Development Reviews. This is an opportunity for the student to feed back to us about their experience at A4S. They receive feedback from us about their coursework, attendance, behaviour, engagement and interpersonal skills since starting the course. This has been very productive, either in increasing their confidence and self-esteem or by the realisation that how they behave and engage has consequences for what they will achieve and on those around them. We also discuss their progression and their aspirations for their future. The students are encouraged and supported in setting targets for themselves for the next term. During this meeting we also look at the students’ strengths from their own perspective and the perspective of their coaches who know them well and link this to what a college or employer would be looking for in a potential student or employee. If the meeting highlights that the student needs further support in any way such as emotional literacy, then we can offer that, or signpost them in the right direction. Generally the students have said they have found the reviews helpful and motivating. We also measure ‘soft outcomes’ such as confidence and self-esteem on a regular basis at A4S. This gives us evidence that our interventions are increasing the well-being of our young people, and helps us look at how we can meet their needs and improve the service that we offer in the future.
Our team at A4S includes a CPCAB Qualified Counsellor and we are able to offer a 1-1 service to those students for whom it has been identified during the Personal Development Plans that this level of support could be beneficial. Alternatively this may be specifically requested at the point of referral.
At A4S we promote a culture of inclusivity, welcoming all young people regardless of ability or disability. We will always do our best to accommodate any special requirements. In line with the charitable objectives of ProgressAbility.org we also actively encourage the inclusion of ‘harder to reach’ young people who might be marginalised by social, geographical or economic disadvantage. This gives every learner the opportunity to achieve qualifications while with A4S.
Voice of the Child
We welcome any feedback from our learners ,both positive and negative. Students’ feedback will help us with decision making within the organisation and contribute towards change that will make their learning experience more successful in the future.
Communication with referrers
It is important that a student’s referrer communicates with A4S and our team of coaches. Keeping us updated on student circumstances or other changes helps us to do the best we can for our students and support them in every way possible.
